Old World Provisions Will Open Manufacturing Plant at FormerĀ Cappiello Dairy in Schenectady County

April 13, 2023Jim Salengo

Expands Production for Iconic Carnegie Deli Cheesecake and Growing Portfolio of Specialty Food Brands

Schenectady, N.Y., April 13, 2023 — The Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority today announced plans by Old World Provisions to lease the former Cappiello Dairy manufacturing plant at 115 Van Guysling Avenue in downtown Schenectady. The new facility enables the company to grow its bakery and specialty confections business and creates more than 50 new jobs in Schenectady County.

The former Cappiello plant offers over 20,000 square feet of manufacturing space. The facility will receive a $1 million makeover so it can be used by Old World’s growing bakery division. Old World Provisions produces a full line of delicatessen products and operates under an exclusive partnership to produce Carnegie Deli recipes, including their world-famous cheesecake. The new manufacturing facility will operate as a specialty bakery for customers across the country and it will produce Carnegie Deli’s cheesecakes, and new chocolate covered Carnegie Deli Cheesecake Bites, for sale online and at grocery stores across the United States.

ā€œI am grateful to have this opportunity in Schenectady as we carry on our family’s legacy in the food business,ā€ says Seth Shuket, President of Old World Provisions. ā€œOur family has produced the finest New York-style delicatessen products for four generations, and we are the proud stewards of brands like Carnegie Deli. As we continue to grow and represent more beloved specialty food products, our mission remains the same: to create the best product made by our family so that it can be shared with yours.ā€

The former Cappiello plant is owned by BelGioioso, a specialty cheese manufacturer that now operates locally out of a 100,000 square foot manufacturing plant and 120,000 square feet of distribution space at the Glenville Business and Technology Park in Schenectady County. Metroplex worked closely with BelGioioso on the Glenville expansion and worked with both companies to attract Old World Provisions to Schenectady County. A capital grant of $295,000 will help Old World Provisions defray a portion of the costs to retrofit the former dairy plant to accommodate the new manufacturing line.

ā€œWe welcome Old World Provisions to Schenectady County and thank BelGioioso for working with our economic development team at Metroplex to bring this sweet deal to our community that breathes new life into the former Cappiello plant,ā€ said Anthony Jasenski, Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature. ā€œOur efforts to attract new businesses and to help existing businesses expand has continued our growth in the food and manufacturing sector, creating local jobs and further diversifying our economy.ā€

Mayor Gary McCarthy said, ā€œSchenectady is a destination for great food. Having Carnegie Deli Cheesecake products made here is very exciting as this made-in Schenectady product will be shipped nationwide. We thank the Shuket family for making this investment in our community.ā€

Old World Provisions is a family-owned company that spans four generations producing the finest specialty, high quality food products. As they continue to grow, Old World Provisions’ manufacturing capabilities need to keep up with demand and quality. A number of locations in Upstate New York were considered for the new production line before Schenectady County was selected.
