August 18, 2021, Schenectady, N.Y. — The Schenectady Metroplex Development Authority today announced that it has signed a contract to purchase the vacant Adirondack Trailways building at 22 State Street in downtown Schenectady for $285,000. The station has been vacant for a number of years. A bus pull-off area and bus shelter will be built by Metroplex as part of the plans to reconstruct South Church Street this fall. This will allow bus riders who can order tickets on-line at Trailways.com to continue using intercity bus service in Schenectady.
“We appreciate the full cooperation we have received from Adirondack Trailways. They have no plans to reopen the station as passengers can order tickets online. The vacant station is a detriment to development on lower State Street, so we are pleased to sign this purchase agreement,” said Ray Gillen, Metroplex Chair.
Metroplex plans to remove asbestos in the building and demolish it this fall creating a new parking lot to serve lower State Street developments. This area represents the third and final stage of redevelopment in downtown Schenectady and nearby investments include a $20 million renovation of the former YMCA, the new $40 million Mill Artisan District including the Frog Alley Brewery, new greenspace at Gateway Plaza, the $11 million student housing development for SUNY Schenectady, the $20 million Electric City Apartments and the Armory Center, which recently hosted Amazon Studios production of Modern Love Season 2.
Metroplex is also working with the City of Schenectady to reconstruct South Church Street which borders the former bus station creating more on street parking, adding lights and security cameras. Metroplex and SUNY Schenectady are rebuilding a parking lot on South Church Street.
