Schenectady, N.Y., January 20, 2016 –The Schenectady County Metroplex Board of Directors met today and approved a sales tax exemption to support plans by GE to invest up to $45 million at the company’s downtown Schenectady campus which is the headquarters of the company’s largest business unit – GE Power.
Ray Gillen, Metroplex Chair said, “We are pleased to support additional GE investment in Schenectady County. This investment by GE continues the many improvements at the Schenectady campus over recent years, including a new Welcome Center that opened in December and the company’s announcement last week of 100 new jobs in Niskayuna.”
GE will renovate 72,000 square feet of office space in Building 40 and 40,000 square feet of office space in Building 5. Building 43 will see 31,000 square feet of space renovated as an employee wellness center and enhanced and expanded fitness center. A number of other improvements will also be made including upgrades to roads, sidewalks and landscaping.
Metroplex will provide an exemption on sales tax for building materials purchased for the renovation projects.
GE Schenectady is headquarters to the company’s largest business unit — GE Power. The 639 acre Schenectady GE campus is also home to GE Renewable Energy, GE Energy Storage, steam turbine and generator manufacturing, a wind energy remote operations center and corporate support functions. In total, the company has approximately 4,000 employees in downtown Schenectady and more than 2,000 at the Global Research Center in Niskayuna.
