2017 Hometown Heroes Banner Program Sponsorship Deadline Extended

April 6, 2017Jim Salengo

Program Expanded to Include Honorees throughout Schenectady County

Honoree Nominations Currently Being Accepted

Schenectady, NY, April 6, 2017 – The Downtown Schenectady Improvement Corporation (DSIC) and City of Schenectady are partnering for a third year to present the Hometown Heroes Banner Program. Each banner will honor a specific Schenectady serviceperson and will include his or her name, branch of service, and photo. Banners will be displayed on street lamps in Downtown Schenectady along State Street and around City Hall from mid-May until mid-November.

DSIC Executive Director Jim Salengo said, “The pride, emotions, and community support generated by our Hometown Heroes Banner Program over the past two years has exceeded all of our expectations. We look forward to honoring many more deserving Schenectady servicepersons in 2017.”

Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy said, “The Hometown Heroes program is a wonderful way to show public appreciation for our local servicepersons while adding visual interest to the streets of our vibrant downtown.”

SPONSORSHIPS

This year, the program has been expanded to recognize Hometown Heroes (living or deceased) throughout Schenectady County, not just from the City of Schenectady. To qualify, honorees must meet at least the following requirements:

  1. One or more of the following: A) A current County resident; B) Born and raised in Schenectady County; C) graduated from one of Schenectady County’s five (5) School Districts.
  2. Serving on active duty in the United States Armed Forces or National Guard, OR a military veteran (living or deceased) who has served in the United States Armed Forces or National Guard and has been honorably discharged.

Banners may be sponsored by individuals, organizations, or businesses at a cost of $300 per banner. The sponsorship application deadline has been extended to Friday, April 14 to be included in the initial round of banners for mid-May. Due to a limited number of locations, all sponsorships will be approved on a first come, first served basis.

At the conclusion of the program, banners will be presented to sponsors along with an 8 x 10” print of the banner image suitable for framing. Download a banner sponsorship form.

HONOREE NOMINATIONS

A public nominations process is also currently underway to identify eligible honorees for banners without specific honorees designated by the sponsoring company. There is no cost to nominate a serviceperson. Nominations are due by Friday, April 28. Download an honoree nomination form.
