SAS Volunteers to Paint Neighborhood Themed Artwork on City Utility Boxes

SCHENECTADY – Mayor Gary McCarthy and the Schenectady Art Society (SAS) announced a new beautification project on Friday in the City of Schenectady. Local artists from the SAS are seeking community input and design concepts to paint traffic signal utility boxes throughout the city with neighborhood themed artwork and murals. The first piece – which has a theater and entertainment theme – was unveiled by the team in downtown Schenectady on Friday at the corner of State Street and Jay Street.

“The arts and have a rich history here in the City of Schenectady,” Mayor McCarthy said. “When we were approached by the Schenectady Art Society to make this a reality, we thought it would be a truly wonderful idea and we’re looking forward to spreading the initiative throughout our neighborhoods.”

The SAS was founded in 1967 and encourages local artists to promote the importance of original artwork. The group also offers educational programs and opportunities to exhibit the work of local artists to the community.

“Through original artwork we can add new life to a community and we are thrilled to work with the city in this exciting endeavor,” said SAS President Debra Carpenter. “Each of these designs will promote the surrounding area, giving emphasis to the many jewels the city has to offer.”

Community organizations and residents who wish to donate art supplies or have design concepts may contact the Schenectady Art Society at www.schenectadyartsociety.com or by email at justdebartworks@gmail.com.
